VILLAGE PUB

The importance of the pub in the life of any village is incalculable. It’s the social centre and meeting place, the place where you go to find out what’s on, to celebrate a triumph or commiserate over a loss as well as feeding the inner man and woman. A good pub brings the village centre to life and sometimes will even be the deciding factor on where you live. Waldron’s pub, The Star, is just such a place and we are so lucky that it’s an independently owned and run establishment where you can still meet a friend and enjoy glass of something, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, or a cup of coffee even if you don’t want to eat. But if you can get a reasonable meal as well, that’s a real bonus, so news that there’s a new chef at The Star is worth a line or two. Nick has been hard at work in Paul Lefort’s new kitchen for just over a week and there are new and traditional items on the menu, so drop in and try it out for yourself.

SERVICES

This Sunday 6th July there will be a Family Service at All Saints’ at 11.15 am. WI This month’s WI meeting on Wednesday 9th July will be the Garden party at Oakleigh Cottage by kind invitation of Beth Simons. Our Members are very fortunate to include amongst their number several garden enthusiasts who are prepared to welcome Waldron’s WI to see the results of their hard work. Not only that, but through the activities of the Garden Group, several visits have been arranged to see gardens in the immediate vicinity which have given great pleasure to everyone who has been in the party. Next month, as is usual in August, there will not be a formal meeting, but an outing to visit Standen, the National Trust property near East Grinstead designed by Philip Webb in the 1890s, known for its arts and crafts connections, and decorated throughout with William Morris carpets, fabrics and wallpapers. It is set in a beautiful hillside garden and is well worth a visit.

FLOWER CLUB

The Horam and Heathfield Flower Club invites our flower arrangers along to their next meeting which will be held on Thursday 10th July at 7.30 pm at the Heathfield Community Centre in Sheepsetting Lane. The demonstration will be by Susan Shaw on the theme of “Revolutions” and there will be light refreshments, a raffle and sales table. Visitors pay a fee of £3.50.

FRENCH VISIT

Our Croquet players have been playing a team from Forges Les Eaux in an annual fixture for several years now. This year the French visitors will be coming for the weekend of 2nd and 3rd August with a team of six staying in the village. Last year the Waldron team won the match, so our visitors will undoubtedly want to exact their revenge this year!
